Final event for season

The last event of the Sunnybrook Farm season is set for Saturday, Sept. 12. Michelle Kastrukoff, a farm spokesman, said Pioneer Days runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Gate admission is $5 per person or $15 for family. A farmer’s breakfast is set for 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at $5 a person. Wagon and barrel rides, cookie walk, concession homestead demonstrations, children’s activities, playground ceremony, homemade pies, silent auction and tractor parade will highlight the day. The Golden Furrow Award will be presented to the Richards family at 12:30 p.m. by Red Deer Mayor Morris Flewwelling. The Richards are being recognized for their contribution to the rural community, Kastrukoff said. For more information telephone 403-340-3511.


Cabaret songs

Cabaret songs made famous by Marlene Dietrich and Lotte Lenya will be featured on Thursday as part of the First Thursdays at the Snell lunchtime concert series at the Red Deer Public Library. Local singer Sharon Braun and pianist Cheryl Cooney will perform a range of material — from tunes by Kurt Weill and Frederick Hollander to modern cabaret music and piano arrangements by Oscar Peterson. Admission to the 12:15 to 1 p.m. concert in the Snell Auditorium is free. Coffee and tea will be provided by Cafe Noir.


Theatre lessons

Christian Youth Theatre is starting up fall classes on Thursday, Sept. 10 in Red Deer. Eight to 18 year olds can sign up for drama, voice and musical theatre lessons at $220 per child (sibling discounts are available). This age group can also audition for a touring production of A Christmas Carol. Six and seven year olds can register for Our Gang, a class that’s specially designed for this age group for $165. All classes will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Deer Park Alliance Church (no affiliation). Scholarships of up to 50 per cent off are available for students requiring financial assistance.
