United Way kickoff

There’s still time to support the United Way of Central Alberta by a buying ticket for its 2009 kickoff luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 10, featuring community philanthropist Brett Wilson. Wilson, of Calgary, is the 2009 Alberta Venture Business Person of the Year. Wilson is the also known as the newest dragon on CBC’s The Dragon’s Den. The luncheon will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Red Deer Lodge. Tickets are $400 for eight tickets or $50 each. Tickets are available online at www.caunitedway.ca or by calling Jennifer at 403-343-3900.

Rock 'n' Ross Dance Party

A Rock and Roll Dance Party is set for Saturday, Sept. 26, starting at 8:30 p.m. at the Red Deer Legion at 2810 Bremner Ave. The Ladies Auxiliary annual dance costs $15 per person, with hot dogs, pickled eggs and popcorn included and available all evening. Triple Nickel will perform and dancers are asked to dress for the occasion, with prizes and contests during the event. Advanced tickets only available at the Legion reception or from Ladies Auxiliary members.

Earthdance Celebrations

Red Deer will join in an international celebration of peace with Earthdance on Sept. 26. The global festival for peace will include a synchronized prayer for peace at 5 p.m. at City Hall Park, located at 4914 48th Ave. Dance performances will be held at the park between 3:30 and 5 p.m., including a community drum circle at 4:15 p.m. Other Earthdance activities include:

• Story time at the downtown Red Deer Public Library, at 4818 49th St., from 11 a.m. to noon.

• Open mike with different artists at the HUB, at 4936 Ross St., from noon to 3:15 p.m.

• Local bands will perform at Earthdance: Rock Your World at Farside Lounge at Red Deer College at 8 p.m.

Events are free of charge except for the Farside event, where there will be an $8 cover charge. Money raised will go to support Central Alberta Refugee Effort Youth Group.
