Runners still have time to enter Red Deer’s 29th Annual Harvest Run, at Riverglen School at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Hosted by the Red Deer Runners Club, the run supports a bursary to help amateur runners with training and competition. Registration is $35 for the eight-km race, including a pair of socks, or $5 for the three-km race and an extra $5 for the socks. Call the Runner’s Den, 403-341-4446.


Mr. Mikes raised $1,567

Customers who bought burgers during Mikeburger Madness at Mr. Mikes Restaurant in Red Deer raised $1,567 for Ronald McDonald House this summer, says company spokesman Sarah Allin. The 6-week campaign that ended last month saw $1 from the sale of every Mikeburger donated to the local charity. Red Deer and 3 other Mr. Mikes restaurants raised a total of $6,547 for Ronald McDonald House charities in Alberta. The promotion raised $50,887 for local charities at participating Mr. Mike’s locations in B.C. and Alberta.


River Boat Poker Rally

Outlaw Eagle Manufacturing Ltd. and the Canadian Cancer Society is teaming up for a river boat poker rally on the Brazeau River on Sept. 11. All entry fees and donations will go to the Central Alberta branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. The rally runs from the Brazeau Dam boat launch off Hwy 820 northwest of Rocky Mountain House to Blackstone River and back. Camping is available. Traffic cameras

School’s back in session and photo radar is trained on school zones and playgrounds. Red Deer City RCMP plan to set the cameras up in the following locations from now through Sept. 10:

• School zones on 39th St., Nolan St., Lawford Avenue, Oleander Dr ive and 42A Avenue.

• Playground zones on 57th Avenue, Kerrywood Drive, Dowler Street, Addington Drive and 58 Street.

• Traffic corridors on 49 Avenue, 50 Avenue, Taylor Drive, 30 Avenue, 49 Street. and 55 Street.

Police reserve the right to change locations without notice.


Survivors tea

The fifth annual Survivors Tea for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure will celebrate good health on Sept. 12 at the Capri Centre. The event will include motivational speakers, hot beverages and food. Survivors and their guests should RSVP by Sunday (Sept. 5) by calling Helen at 403-755-7995 or e-mailing happyknights75@yahoo.com. The tea is sponsored by the Capri Hotel and Convention Centre.


Life at Zero

Humanitarian organization Life At Zero Development Canada is hosting a barbecue fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Red Deer Farmer’s Market site on Saturday. All proceeds will go towards feeding orphans and building an orphanage in southern Sudan. Life at Zero is a Red Deer-based charity developed by Bako Dabi, who grew up in Sudan. Donations on site or can be sent to Life at Zero, 5018 Ross St., Red Deer, T4N 1Y3. www.lazfoundation.org. The farmer’s market is at 43th Street and 46th Avenue.
