A family of three people fled a fire that destroyed their home and garage on Friday morning in the Morrisroe neighbourhood in Red Deer.

The fire, which occurred at 45 MacFarlane Avenue, started in the garage and is not suspicious, said Red Deer Emergency Services fire investigator Brad Legere, who arrived at 3:54 a.m. at the fire.

“We haven’t declared a cause or origin,” he said.

The three occupants of the home, a husband and wife and their adult son, heard popping and looked outside and saw the detached garage in the back yard fully involved in fire.

They evacuated safely, along with their dog. Their cat, which was very old, was missing after the fire.

The owner, who declined to be identified, was calmly standing outside in the back alley drinking coffee and speaking with firefighters after the fire.

He said that he had already been on the phone about rebuilding his home, and had no plans to leave the neighbourhood where the family has lived for 18 years.
