Preston Courtney, his mom Tammy, and Kim Johnson of Red Deer move away from the shore at the 67th street bridge as they make their way down the Red Deer River on Thursday.

“This is what we do on our days off, we pray for the sun on our days off,” said Johnson, who added it had taken them four hours to go the distance from Ft. Normandeau to the bridge.

Temperatures in Central Alberta topped out at a high of 31 degrees on Thursday but temperatures through the weekend are forecast to be much cooler, which will keep all but the die-hard rafters from floating downstream.
