A Red Deer driver was arrested earlier this week for impaired driving near several schools.

On Tuesday, around 10:15 a.m., police received reports of a black Ford Mustang driving erratically near Eastview Middle School. It was reported that the vehicle nearly hit another vehicle and hit the curb several times in front of the school.

RCMP located the suspect vehicle a short time later in the parking lot of Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and after the driver was given a breathalyzer, they were placed under provincial sanctions with an immediate suspension of his driver’s licence and the vehicle was seized for 30 days. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for careless driving, which carries a fine of $567.

“Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injury and has devastating impacts on families,” says Mike Zufferli, Red Deer RCMP. “This incident was very concerning because the vehicle had driven through two separate school zones at a time of day when children are present.”
