In-person Polar Plunge returns to Red Deer

Event to be held Feb. 18

The Law Enforcement Torch Run’s Polar Plunge will be held in person for the first time since 2019.

There will be a series of Polar Plunge events throughout the province beginning this weekend. The Red Deer event will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Bower-Kin Community Centre.

Money raised through the Polar Plunge, which also features six total events across Alberta, will benefit more than 2,500 Special Olympics Alberta athletes, and supports local sports programs and competitions.

The Polar Plunge started as an annual event in Lethbridge in 2012. Since then, more than 5,000 people have taken the plunge across the province and raised over half a million dollars for Special Olympics Alberta.

The goal this year is to have 1,000 plungers across the province help raise $150,000.

This is the 12th anniversary of the event in Alberta. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness and grassroots fundraising organization for Special Olympics globally.

In Alberta, the Law Enforcement Torch Run holds a number of fundraising and awareness campaigns throughout the year, including the annual Polar Plunge.

Anyone over 16 is able to plunge. For more information, visit www.specialolympics.ab.ca/albertatorchrun/polar-plunge-2023.
