Sylvan Lake RCMP says the individual responsible for making a pair of bomb threats to a Sylvan Lake school last week has been identified.

On Sunday evening, RCMP stated it was determined both threats aimed towards Fox Run School originated from a youth residing in another province.

“RCMP has been in contact with law enforcement partners in that jurisdiction and the name of the youth will not be released,” RCMP said in a press release.

Just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Sylvan Lake RCMP received a report of a bomb threat made against Fox Run School, which is a middle school that is part of Chinook’s Edge School Division.

The school and the connecting Mother Theresa School were evacuated and police searched the building, finding nothing suspicious.

The following day, police received another report of a bomb threat against Fox Run School, this time at about 2 p.m. The building was again evacuated and searched, with nothing suspicious being found.

The Grade 7 and 8 students returned to the classroom Thursday, Feb. 9.

The RCMP’s investigation has now concluded. Police say there are zero threats to the community.

“The RCMP takes very seriously any threat to the safety of students and schools. There will always be a thorough investigation processes to ensure a community’s feeling of safety and mental wellbeing,” said police.

“Sylvan Lake RCMP would like to thank the school administration, students, and parents for their support and patience during this incident.”

No further updates are anticipated from RCMP.

Last week, Chinook’s Edge School Division superintendent Kurt Sacher praised the school’s staff for their response to the threat.

“When you go through a process like this you learn from it. Some of the messaging on our end, we recognize we need to move a little quicker with some of that. We’re trying to address some of those concerns. But overall we’re very pleased with the school’s staff and the care they took with the students,” Sacher said this past Thursday.

Sacher also praised the efforts of Sylvan Lake RCMP.
