Innisfail Legion unveils new mural project

The Innisfail Legion has unveiled plans to have a series of murals painted on the exterior walls of their building.

Branch president Stephen Black made the announcement last Friday on Remembrance Day, following the cenotaph ceremony.

“This is another way we can show the community what the Legion is about, a reminder to everyone travelling down Main Street to remember the sacrifices of those who have fought to protect the way of life we enjoy in Canada today,” Black said.

The legion is hoping to raise $40,000 for the project and how much is raised will depend on the scope of the murals. Several local families donated to the project on behalf of loved ones who were soldiers and throughout the course of Remembrance Day alone, just over $14,000 was committed to it.

They have been working with Innisfail resident Karen Scarlett on the murals. Scarlett was the artist who designed and developed the Welcome mural that was painted last summer at The Coffee Cottage in Innisfail.

“When Karen, along with Jason Heistad, presented the Executive Committee with the idea we knew we wanted to find a way to make it happen,” said Black. “Seeing how much excitement and community spirit there was in Innisfail while the Coffee Cottage mural was being painted, we knew it would be something that would be good for the community.”

Scarlett said the final design has not been determined but noted she will work with the Mural Project Committee on the design to ensure it reflects all branches of military service.
