Is it legal to push someone off a cliff to their death?
Ever sit on a ledge and think about jumping to your death? Many Canadians would quickly help you get back to safety. Others would help you resolve the issues that brought you to the ledge. It has been illegal to push someone to their death, and cold-blooded murder to push someone off the ledge against their will. But that could all change soon.
The Senate is currently debating Bill C-14. It will clarify under what circumstances it will be legal to help someone end their life, assisted suicide. So someday, while sitting on a ledge, if you ask someone to give you a compassionate push, they will not necessarily be guilty of murder.
There is more! If you decide someone has a low quality of life, it may even be legal to bring them to the ledge and compassionately toss them to their death (with dignity of course) without their consent! Euthanasia.
Human life is sacred. Our protected status should not come from our ability to contribute nor our perceived quality of life. For at some time or another, we are all helplessly dependant on others. We are human, that is the basis for our Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms in Canada.
