Two Red Deer men accused of attempted murder earlier this year will stay in jail pending a preliminary hearing next spring.

Brad Voykin, 23 and Joshua Cusler (also know as hill Hill), 27, were arrested in Red Deer on March 19 after Blackfalds RCMP were called to reports that a man had been shot while inside a home at the Balmoral Heights acreage subdivision, immediately east of Red Deer.

Two suspects alleged to also be suffering gunshot wounds were apprehended by Red Deer City RCMP investigating a collision in Northwood Estates, a mobile home park on the north side of the city.

Voykin and Cusler have asked to be tried by judge and jury in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on charges including attempted murder, extortion and armed robbery.

Both men were denied bail after an appearance with their lawyers in Red Deer provincial court on Friday morning.

They are to return to court for a preliminary hearing the week of May 5 to 9, 2014.

Preliminary hearings are not mandatory, but may be requested to determine the strength of the Crown’s case against the accused.
