July 1 fireworks in Red Deer to go ahead

The July 1 fireworks display at Westerner Park will go ahead as planned.

The Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, the organization that typically puts on a full day of events at Bower Ponds in Red Deer, will not be hosting an event this year in light of the recent discovery of unrecorded children’s graves in the country.

Westerner Park gates will open at 10:15 p.m. for people to come into the parking lots and watch the show.

With most provincial COVID-19 restrictions lifted Thursday, individuals do not have to stay in their vehicles. Organizers are also allowing foot traffic, so patches of grass will be available for people to have a place to sit.

The fireworks will start at 11 p.m.

Apart from the fireworks, the heritage society is posting online videos of various local dance groups celebrating multiculturalism.
