Lacombe County has donated $8,000 towards a memorial project.

The Lacombe Royal Canadian Legion is raising money to install a monument at the city’s Fairview Cemetery. It is meant to pay tribute to the Canadian soldiers who served in Afghanistan.

The monument is a LAV III light armoured vehicle similar to those the Canadian Armed Forces used in Afghanistan. The memorial version was stripped of weaponry, engine, steering, communications systems and lighting.

Total cost of the project is about $62,500 and the Legion had raised $46,105 in donations and in-kind contributions.

That left $16,363 remaining and the county’s contribution now halves that.
