The Village of Clive has to replace the refrigerant in its ice rink because of changing federal regulations.

Refrigerant being used now is being phased out so Clive Athletic and Agricultural Society mut upgrade rink equipment, including a condenser and leak detection monitors.

The project is expected to cost around $193,000. Clive is contributing $10,000 and another $27,000 has already been raised through fundraising and sponsorships.

Lacombe County was asked to provide from 35 to 50 per cent ($67,598 to $95,569) of the cost.

County staff reviewed the request and determined that based on usage of the facility by county residents 46 per cent or $88,843 would be appropriate under county policy. The money would come out of a recreation capital assistance reserve that has about $2.7 million.

On Thursday, county council approved up to $88,843 for the project with the understanding the society would raise the rest of the money needed.

Council also stepped up on Thursday to provide another $9,500 to the Lacombe and District Historical Society.

The funding, which would boost the county’s contribution this year to $49,570, was requested after a provincial museum grant the society has received a number of times in recent years did not materialize this year, leaving a hole in the society’s budget.

The society oversees Michener House, the Blacksmith Shop and the Flat Iron Building.
