Lacombe County may support boat launch plan

Lacombe County is considering climbing aboard a resident group’s proposal to build a new boat launch on Gull Lake.

Lacombe County is considering climbing aboard a resident group’s proposal to build a new boat launch on Gull Lake.

The Westlake Community Society has written a letter to the county asking if it was interested in a possible joint venture to build the boat launch at the end of Westlake Road (Range Road 42-0) on the west side of the lake.

It would be the fifth launch on that side of the lake and would be about 1.6 km north of the Birch Bay boat launch, which the county has agreed to buy so it can be reopened. The launch, which had been used by the public for decades, was closed by its private owner about two years ago because of liability concerns.

The county is also working on developing another boat launch on the east side of the lake as part of the development of the Anderson Park Recreation Area.

Council has not budgeted any money in 2013 for the Westlake launch but has offered to participate in future discussions about the project.
