Lacombe man charged in attack on Red Deer taxi driver

A 22-year-old male from Lacombe County has been charged with assault and mischief following an attack on a taxi driver in north Red Deer early Saturday morning.

A 22-year-old male from Lacombe County has been charged with assault and mischief following an attack on a taxi driver in north Red Deer early Saturday morning.

The suspect, who cannot be named until information is sworn, was a passenger in the cab when he allegedly became aggressive towards the driver.

The driver attempted to call for assistance over the dispatch radio but the suspect grabbed the radio microphone and threw it on the floor.

The driver pulled over and another motorist called police.

The suspect is also said to have attempted to punch the driver of a second taxi that arrived at the scene. The incident happened near Taylor Drive and Hwy. 11A around 2:35 a.m. on Saturday.

Police arrived at the scene and located the suspect, who was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

The man has been released and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on Dec. 21.

RCMP are still investigating the incident and are asking that anyone with information call 403-343-5575.
