The Legends of Toronto hockey game has been cancelled, the recipient charity said in a release Wednesday.

The March 15 game and banquet were being held in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer and District, which are operated by Youth HQ.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the NHL Legends of Hockey have informed us of their decision to cancel the event,” the Youth HQ release said, adding the organization is disappointed in the decision.

“The cancellation is ultimately irreversible, as the decision is not within our control.”

Money was being raised through player pledging, ticket sales and sponsorships. The programs that were receiving support are active in nine central Alberta communities.

“As a result of this unforeseen decision, Youth HQ, in tandem with these programs, will suffer some financial loss.”

Tickets purchased for the game will be refunded.
