Youth who use Glendale Skatepark will continue to benefit from a skatepark mentorship program thanks to a donation from Border Paving Ltd.

The Red Deer company has maintained its $100,000 donation to skatepark programming and donated another $50,000 to Northside Community Centre YMCA to provide opportunities for youth through year-round programs at its Youth Centre.

“I believe that a place like the YMCA is a second home for a lot of kids that need it,” said Vic Walls, who owns Border Paving Ltd. along with his wife, Wendy, and their children.

“They’ve got a place to go if they have a Y.”

He said his family has benefited hugely from the Red Deer community and it’s about giving back.

The skatepark mentorship program began in 2021 and since then has grown and thrived thanks to generous annual donations from Border Paving, said the YMCA.

Through the mentorship, youth who visit the skatepark can get guidance from YMCA staff, experienced skaters and BMX bikers who want to help make sure the skatepark remains a safe and inclusive space for young people of all skill levels and backgrounds to enjoy.

Starting in May, mentors are at the park every day after school and on weekends, offering encouragement, teaching skills and providing water and snacks to anyone who wants them.

Northside Community Centre YMCA also offers free activities for youth, as well as free hot meals on Fridays.
