Sue Barthel was the honorary senior recognized at the annual Mayor’s Garden Party on Wednesday in City Hall Park.

“I’m in shock,” said Barthel, who has been volunteering in the community for a long time now.

She is currently a volunteer with the Youth and Volunteer Centre, which is now known as Youth HQ.

“I’ve been with them for about 30 years. I love everything that they do for kids, so through the years, I’ve been a big sister. I’m still mentoring students in the schools.”

Barthel also helps on the event side of things for the centre, along with working in reception twice a week.

“When you think community life, you think of Sue,” said Mayor Tara Veer, who was dressed for this year’s theme of high tea.

Veer said the event began as an event the City of Red Deer hosted to honour seniors for Seniors Month.

“We commence the month with free recreation activities at all city facilities for Red Deer seniors, and we conclude the month with the Mayor’s Garden Party.

“It’s one of the ways that we celebrate community life and it really is the launch of our public gardens in City Hall Park for the season,” said Veer.
