The Town of Sylvan Lake continues to keep the ball rolling on a huge recreation park project.

Council approved a $249,164 contract for Edmonton-based Select Engineering Services, which will provide detailed landscape architectural services for the first phase of the proposed Pogadl Park on the west side of Sylvan Lake.

The park is expected to include six ball diamonds, three soccer and sports fields, volleyball, basketball and pickleball courts, an outdoor hockey rink, campground and amenity building with change rooms, spray park and playground. A trail will ring the park and connect the various features.

The project got a big boost in 2016, when the Pogadl family donated 20 acres and sold another 60 acres to the town.

A concept design was created after extensive public involvement and input from local sports groups and other users.

The project is expected to take many years before it is completed.

Town council also approved the reallocation of $30,000 to hire a consultant to do some of the planning work behind the town’s application for a water lease from the province.

The lease is necessary for the town to continue to work toward its vision for the lakeshore, which includes new recreational and commercial opportunities, as well as a day mooring place for boaters who want to pop into town for a few hours.

The town is also going ahead with a new playground on Sylvan Drive. The $75,000 project will replace an outdated playground and is expected to be completed in July.
