A judge has ordered a psychiatric assessment for a man accused of abducting a teenage girl in Central Alberta.

The order was issued at a court appearance in Red Deer for Gerard John Baumgarte.

The 56-year-old Red Deer resident will remain behind bars until he appears again in court May 15.

Baumgarte faces fives charges, including kidnapping with a firearm and personating a peace officer.

He was arrested Feb. 28, a few days after a 16-year-old girl from Penhold disappeared while on her way to a convenience store.

She managed to escape and call her parents from a Red Deer mall a few days later.
