A 20-year-old Edmonton man faces charges of impaired driving by drug and dangerous driving following a harrowing two-vehicle crash on Tuesday morning near Ponoka.

Const. Chris Noble of Ponoka RCMP freeway patrol said the crash occurred on Hwy 2 near the intersection of the Hwy 12 and Hwy 2 overpass.

The freeway soon becomes three lanes in each direction at this juncture.

The incident started around 9:15 a.m. when a small white car heading north on Hwy 2 near Hwy 12 crossed over the median several times.

It then exited the median at the Lacombe exit 431 and went under the overpass in the median. It next came out of the median into the southbound lane, where it struck a pickup vehicle.

The pickup rolled several times in the median and the small white car also spun into the median.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The driver of the pickup, estimated to be in his 40s, was transported to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre with non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the white car was treated and released into police custody.

Noble said police called in an expert officer qualified in recognizing drug impairment to examine the driver of the small white car.

That driver has been charged with dangerous driving and impaired operation of a vehicle by drug.

Noble said further investigation of suspected possession of a controlled substance may result in additional charges.

The name of the accused hasn’t been released yet because the information hasn’t been sworn to date.

The investigation continues.
