A Brooks man has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a collision that killed a taxi passenger early Saturday morning.

Red Deer RCMP have charged 18-year-old Tyler James Wilson in the collision between a truck and a cab.

According to Red Deer City RCMP, the Alberta Gold taxi was stopped facing northbound at about 3:30 a.m., when a truck travelling north on 30th Avenue rear-ended the cab.

The taxi was extensively damaged, and the pickup rolled onto its side, blocking the intersection.

The male taxi passenger died at the scene. He was riding in the back seat of a cab that was hit from behind by a pickup truck at 30th Avenue and 32nd Street.

The cab driver was rushed to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre with what were initially thought to be serious injuries. He was treated and released on Saturday afternoon.

The dead man has been identified as 33-year-old Jonathon David Wood of Red Deer.

The investigation is ongoing.

Wilson made his fist court appearance on Monday morning. He returns on Wednesday afternoon for a bail hearing.
