Man charged with murder of Jenna Cartwright

A man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jenna Cartwright, a 21-year-old Red Deer woman whose body was found in a ditch near Olds in May.

A man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jenna Cartwright, a 21-year-old Red Deer woman whose body was found in a ditch near Olds in May.

Bashir Gaashaan, 29, of no fixed address was arrested in Thunder Bay, Ont. An RCMP arrest team of three officers flew there on Monday and escorted him back to Red Deer.

Gaashaan has been charged with:

• One count of first-degree murder

• One count of unlawful confinement

• One count of sexual assault

• One count of trafficking in cocaine

• One count of offering an indignity to human remains

Gaashaan has been remanded in custody and will appear in Red Deer provincial court on June 29.

On May 3, the Olds RCMP Detachment was advised about the discovery of a body in a rural location

about four kilometers northeast of Olds. The discovery was made by a resident of the area who had been driving at the time.

Cartwright had been reported missing by family on April 12 and was last seen in Red Deer on March 29.
