A Red Deer man charged with murder in the death of an 18-month-old infant last October reserved his plea in Red Deer provincial court on Monday.

Evan Caswell Gilmer, 30, is charged with second degree murder of Garth Leippi.

The stocky man, with greying hair, moustache and goatee, showed no emotion in the prisoner’s box.

Gilmer, who was the boyfriend of the infant’s mother, was originally arrested by police on last October but was not charged. He was re-arrested and charged last week.

Leippi’s injuries occurred at a residence in the 4800 block of 46th Street.

Red Deer RCMP were called to the Red Deer hospital on Oct. 12 after the boy came in by ambulance with suspicious injuries.

Leippi was transported by STARS air ambulance to a Calgary hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He died from his injuries at 3:40 p.m. on Oct. 13.

Gilmer remains in custody and returns to court on July 29.
