A man was run over by a car when he tried to stop a man who was trying to steal gas from his rural property southeast of Red Deer early Saturday morning.

The man was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre after he attempted to stop the suspect by hanging onto the driver’s side window.

He was dragged for a short distance before being run over by the car as the driver fled. The incident started at 3:45 a.m.

The man who was run over was transported to hospital by his wife. He was treated for severe road rash, scrapes to his chest, legs, shoulder and chin. He suffered laceration to one eye, loss of a fingernail, and was also treated for possible concussion.

The injured man’s son chased the fleeing vehicle in a car. As a result, the son’s car was rammed four times by the driver of the first vehicle, causing considerable damage to both vehicles.

The suspect ran off the road in Penhold with the son in pursuit.

The son detained the man and held him until police arrived.

Innisfail RCMP confirm that the vehicle that the suspect was driving was reported stolen.

A 19-year-old man faces 13 charges, including assault with a weapon, dangerous driving, trespassing at night, theft, possession of stolen property and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
