Man sentenced to six years, seven months for 2020 Red Deer homicide

A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a 2020 Red Deer homicide was sentenced to six years and seven months in prison.

Dustin Mitchell Coats, 27, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Jan. 13 for killing James Rufiange, 34. RCMP were called to a Stewart Street home in Sunnybrook on Nov. 25, 2020.

When they arrived they found Rufiange’s body. No other details were released about the incident.

Coats was originally charged with second-degree murder. A nearly three-week trial had been scheduled to start in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench on March 20.

Coats was given seven month’s credit for time served in custody, leaving him with six years to serve.
