WINNIPEG — Manitoba is bringing in an independent investigator after a man was shot by the RCMP during a baseball tournament on a First Nation.

Premier Greg Selinger’s office confirmed it ordered the investigation into the shooting Sunday afternoon on Norway House Cree Nation.

The RCMP say an officer discharged a firearm and a Norway House resident suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told the Winnipeg Free Press there were two baseball games involving 12-year-olds and 17-year-olds at the time of the shooting.

Chief Ron Evans was expected to meet with RCMP Assistant Commissioner Kevin Brosseau to discuss the shooting.

The RCMP has not commented except to confirm it is under investigation.
