The national MNP Canada Games Torch Relay has reached Albertan soil.

On Saturday, the relay made its first Alberta stop in Grande Prairie, ahead of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, which begins Feb. 15.

Lyn Radford, 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society board chair, said the relay is “an exciting opportunity to share the spirit of the Canada Games across the nation.

“We are proud to partner with MNP to deliver the first-ever national MNP Canada Games Torch Relay and celebrate sport and culture in communities across the nation from now until the Opening Ceremony of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer,” said Radford.

The Roly McLenahan Torch was lit from the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Oct. 4. The relay brings the torch through almost 50 communities across Canada before arriving in Red Deer for the 2019 Games opening ceremony.

The next torch event is in Edmonton on Jan. 8.
