Montana First Nation chief to lead Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations

Montana First Nation Chief Leonard Standingontheroad has been named Grand Chief of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations.

Standingontheroad was appointed grand chief in a formal ceremony on Friday. He takes over from Alexander First Nation Chief George Arcand Jr.

“It is a great honour to be appointed Grand Chief of the Confederacy of Treaty Six FirstNation,” said Standingontheroad. “I have always been passionate about upholding our rights as Treaty People.

“During my tenure, I will focus on issues such as health, education and economic development.“

Standingontheroad also aims to build a stronger relationship between the Assembly of First Nations and the Confederacy. He will continue

his work in the areas of addictions and the opioid crisis, early childhood education and economic development in the central Alberta region.

Standingontheroad is a member of the Board of Governors for the Maskwacîs Education Schools Commission, as well chair of the Chiefs Executive Committee.

The Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations was created in 1993 to serve as the united political voice for the First Nations of Treaty Six to protect the fundamental Treaty and human rights of First Nations Peoples. The Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations is dedicated to ensuring that the terms, spirit, and intent of Treaty Six are honoured and respected.
