Seven public washrooms in parks across Red Deer will open on Saturday.

These facilities normally open in the spring, but have remained closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

With the high number of touch points, specifically doors, locks, sink taps and toilet seats, these amenities were considered high risk for the potential spread of COVID-19.

“Although this risk continues, we are seeing more people using our parks,” says recreation and parks manager Shelley Gagnon.

“With additional users, and more expected as we progress through provincial and local relaunch strategies, there is an increased need for access to public washrooms.”

Additional cleaning and sanitation procedures will be put in place, according to Alberta Health guidelines.

Hand sanitizer stations will be installed at all washrooms. Additionally, washroom facilities will be cleaned and sanitized nightly, along with additional daily cleaning.

Facilities that will open include one each in McKenzie Trails, Three Mile Bend, Glendale Skate Park, Kiwanis Picnic Park, Kin Kanyon, Rotary Picnic Park and Bower Ponds Pavilion.

Washrooms are also open at Heritage Ranch, Kerry Wood Nature Centre and the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area Clubhouse.
