More than 200 open blood donor appointments in Red Deer over the next week

There is a desperate need for blood donations in Red Deer as Canada Day approaches.

Canadian Blood Services said Thursday that the Red Deer Centre has more than 230 appointments available between June 24 and July 4.

In a news release, the organization also noted there is a specific need for donors with O-negative blood type. Donors with O-negative blood are part of a select group whose donations are compatible with everyone. As the universal blood type, patients in an emergency can all receive O-negative blood.

According to the release, the national blood inventory is also declining because of increased demand and missed or unfilled blood donation appointments.

To book an appointment, download the GiveBlood app available on the AppStore or GooglePlay, call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283) or book now at blood.ca.
