A male motorcycle driver who crashed into the back of a van Friday morning was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre with unknown injuries.

The motorcyclist was seen using a cell phone as Red Deer Emergency Services personnel tended to his left leg at the scene of the accident, which took place on 49th Avenue outside of Phil’s Restaurant around 10 a.m.

Rob Haslam, the 52-year-old driver of the van, was leaving the restaurant parking lot after having breakfast with his family and said he never saw the motorcyclist before he turned onto 49th Avenue.

“I can’t understand how I didn’t see him,” he said.

“I did hear a little bit of screeching and that’s why I looked in my rearview mirror and then he just hit us instantaneously.

“He was just there right off the bat and the next thing there was the bang.”

Haslam said that he and his wife, daughter and son were all right but a bit shaken up following the accident.

Haslam and his family are from Edmonton, and they’re in town for his daughter’s provincial baseball tournament.

RCMP Const. Tom Harnum said alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
