AIRDRIE — Wanted on a province-wide warrant, Mounties in Airdrie have arrested a man in connection with an armed robbery in West Park in Red Deer.

The 47-year-old man was arrested on Nov. 29, about a week after the warrant was issued.

According to police, he was sought in connection with a Nov. 11 armed robbery of a woman. Police said the man approached the woman as she exited her car in West Park. He demanded money and showed her a handgun.

The woman got back into her car and locked it, but police allege the suspect smashed the car window and took her backpack as she fled the vehicle through the passenger door.

She was not injured and the suspect ran from the scene on foot.

An hour later, the suspect and a woman companion were caught on video in a convenience store and are believed to have used the victim’s credit card. Police said the companion drove a vehicle that was reported stolen on Nov. 1 and was found abandoned in Gasoline Alley on Nov. 12.

The man faces charged including armed robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and fraud under $5,000. He was remanded into custody.
