A collision in central Alberta involving a gravel truck and a car has killed two people from Nanaimo, British Columbia.

WETASKIWIN — A collision in central Alberta involving a gravel truck and a car has killed two people from Nanaimo, British Columbia.

The accident happened late Tuesday morning at an intersection in Westaskiwin, about 70 kilometres south of Edmonton.

RCMP say a 65-year-old man who was driving the car was unable to avoid a crash when the truck pulling a trailer turned in front of him.

Emergency crews had to pry the wreckage of the car apart to free the driver and 63-year-old woman who was a passenger, but both died of their injuries.

The truck driver was not hurt and police have not released any names.

Mounties say alcohol, speed and weather were not factors in the collision and that no charges have been laid.
