Mullets to be worn around Central Alberta in March for mental health awareness

Mullets are back — for the latest campaign by the Canadian Mental Health Association.

The point of getting your hair cut into the ‘business at the front, party at the back’ hairstyle popular in the 1980s, is to raise money and public awareness about the importance of men’s mental health.

Since four out of five suicides involve men, there’s a need to get the message out that more men need to reach out for help with their depression, anxiety and other mental conditions.

According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, incidents of mental illness are comparable between men and women, but men are less empowered to seek assistance. Starting the conversation about mental health is a crucial step towards mental well-being.

“There has never been a time where local mental health services have been more critical. We thought Mullets for Mental Health was a light and fun way to get our community involved, raise money, and bring awareness to the stigma surrounding men’s mental health” said Christine Stewart, executive director at Canadian Mental Health Association of Central Alberta.

The CMHA’s Mullets for Mental Health campaign will run through March, with more information at Canadahelps.org.

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to start their own fundraising page and spread the word about donations through social media. Participants need to “get growing” so they can get their hair cut into a mullet for March.
