Municipal election: Red Deer mayoral candidate Ken Johnston

Ken Johnston (contributed)

Ken Johnston is a Red Deer mayoral candidate.

Red Deer has been home since 1996. During these past 25 years I have been privileged to contiribute to the business, community service, professional and political fabric of our spectacular city.

The citizens and the future of this city motivate me everyday. I have been pleased to give back to it, to build it, to make it better. I have sat on and chaired numerous boards: the chamber, the Westerner, led the United Way fundraising efforts for two years, as well as STARS. I am a Rotarian of 24 years, including a past presidency, I have been an advocate for the Red Deer Hospital, I even danced in a community fundraiser for the Friends of the Hospital! I currently volunteer for the Hospice.

I received the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for outstanding contributions to Canada.

When I ran in 2013 and 2017 it was from the desire to embrace and consider the interests of the entire city in every decision I made.

I believe our city deserves a mayor with vision and strategic collaborative skills. The Office of Mayor also requires a proven track record in leadership. I have been privileged to provide extensive leadership in my banking career, my community volunteer life, and the past two terms on council. Building consensus and vision with a dynamic council and administrative team requires a leader with a depth of experience, with abilities tested and results evident. It requires a leader acquainted with the key stakeholder interests of our city. I am a leader in which you can have confidence. A leader that can act as a catylst, a change agent with the tested relational and collaborative skills it takes to move the city forward.

A mentor of mine said “Ken, you are only ‘new’ once in any position you take”. That’s why I will take full advantage of my first 100 days to launch my eight point platform: Economic Development, A Vibrant Downtown, A Safe and Healthy Community, Value for Taxes, Tourism, Sports and Culture, Addictions Mental Health and Housing, Diversity and Inclusion, Our Environment. I will engage the creative energy of leaders in business, health, athletics, justice, culture, social, education, faith and Indigenous communities. It’s our opportunity to be fully engaged partners. Partnership works, partnership builds, partnership endures.

Take a look around our beautiful city. Consider it’s location in our province, it’s natural setting, it’s facilities and amenities. Consider the energy of it’s citizens, the generosity, the commitment to community. Simply put our potential is unlimited. We are Red Deerians, we accomplish. As we emerge from the pandemic there is no greater a time for collaboration and relationship building. Catch the vision, my vision, of a community with diverse abilities and aspirations working together toward a greater Red Deer.
