Alberta musician Ben Sures and friends are planning a concert later this month in Red Deer.

The Edmonton-based singer/songwriter performs in English, French and Spanish and plays “folk-meets-blues-meets-world music. His most recent album The Story That Lived Here will drop Jan. 21.

Sures will perform along with fiddler Shannon Johnson, bassist Chris Brzezicki and singer Stephanie Suchy, at the Elk’s Lodge at 6315 Horn Street on Jan. 28.

That date would have been legendary Canadian Blues artist Harpdog Brown’s 60th birthday. The Lacombe-based harmonica-playing, Maple Blues Award-winning musician, died on Jan. 7.

The last time Sures performed at the Elk’s Lodge was a few months back with Brown, who was considered a legend in Alberta music circles.

“It’s sadly ironic,” suggested Sures, “since Brown loved aging (and) found comfort in his later years…”

“I’ll be raising a glass to him,” said Sures on Friday.

The show, presented by the Central Music Festival, is at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information visit centralmusicfest.com.

Note: This news story was updated on Jan. 14 to reflect the Jan. 28 live event is an album-release concert.
