How often have you heard words like “my kid could do that,” at art galleries?

The Red Deer Arts Council is currently running a “My Kid Could Do That” themed exhibit until April 22 at Kiwanis Gallery in Red Deer.

Diana Anderson, Red Deer Arts Council coordinator, said the exhibit is for the council’s visual arts members.

She said often the words “my could kid do that” are echoed at art galleries. Hence it was chosen as a theme.

She said twelve visual arts council members participated in the exhibit and came up with close to 30 pieces.

Anderson said the artists came with their own interpretation of the theme from simplistic paintings, abstract and representational work.

Some artists chose to paint keeping their grandchildren in mind while others looked into their own childhood memories.

She said some of the work may look simplistic but one would need the experience in their medium – in this case water colours – to work to their advantage to produce the kind of translucent, luminous work.

“Some were more abstract in form but with also a great deal of knowledge and background of colour and line and form that a kid might not (be able to produce),” she said.

She defined the results as “enlightening” and “extraordinary.”

Anderson said each artist’s work comes with a statement from the artist which reflects their thoughts.
