Since 1995, Laurence and Barb Rooney have had the residents of Parkland Beach guessing about what their latest five-metre snow sculpture at the entrance to their home will be. They used to do the sculptures in their backyard but that had to be moved out front as the number of people looking grew until they had no privacy at all. Laurence is retired and he just loves to work on ice and snow sculptures in shorts, no matter what the weather is. At -29C on this day, the couple were at work filling a large bucket with snow then adding water to make a slush mix. Barb hands the mix the size of a snowball to Laurence and he slaps it on and smooths it out. Then the snow is carved by a hand trowel. Powder is used if needed to make different colours. This is all done between people in vehicles stopping by, trying to guess or get Laurence to reveal what the sculpture will be, but the secret is safe until it is finished. He puts lights in and on it as needed. When it’s finished, people come from all over to see if they guessed right.
