A middle school to be built in the north end of Red Deer has a name.

The new school, which will be located in Kingswood, will be called St. Lorenzo Ruiz Middle School.

After receiving community submissions, Red Deer Catholic Regional School trustees narrowed it down to three choices and unanimously selected the new name last week.

“(Lorenzo Ruiz) was a Chinese-Filipino saint who is the patron saint of the Philippines,” said board chair Anne Marie Watson.

“With Red Deer Catholic Regional School’s large multicultural population, especially our large Filipino population, we felt this was a fitting choice.”

The new building, which will include eight modular units, will have a capacity of 737 students.

The school district will receive $2 million in design funding, with construction funding to follow once the design is finalized.

The architect will be selected this summer. During the new school year, a committee will be selected to consult with the architect on the design.
