Neuron Mobility rolled out out its e-scooters in Red Deer on Friday.

It will be the fourth season for the company in the city, where riders have logged 690,000 kilometres on the company’s two-wheeled rides.

Almost half of e-scooter trips replaced a car journey, saving 54 tonnes of CO2 emissions, according to the company’s research.

Neuron Mobility general manager Ankush Karwal said a survey of riders found 68 per cent of trips resulted in a purchase from a local business. Using an average spend of $70 per trip, the company estimated e-scooter riders injected $5.7 million into the local economy.

In Red Deer, riders must be at least 16 years old and helmets are recommended. E-scooters can be used on sidewalks and paved trails in Red Deer.

Those who want to familiarize themselves with the rules can visit the online ScootSafe Academy at scootsafe.com.

Neuron operates in 17 Canadian communities, including Lethbridge, Airdrie, Sylvan Lake and Blackfalds in Alberta. Neuron e-scooters also operate in B.C., Ontario and Saskatchewan.
