A newly recruited anesthesiologist is now practising at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre to improve access to surgical services.

Dr. Jaco Janse van Rensburg, who spent several years doing post-graduate anesthesia specialist training in South Africa and Ireland, completed his fellowship in anesthesia at the College of Medicine of South Africa and a Master of Medicine in Anesthesia at the University of Cape Town.

Health Minister Adriana LaGrange and MLA for Red Deer-North said new recruit is great news for the growing city and surrounding areas.

“Our government continues to work with our partners to recruit physicians to communities across the province, improving access to healthcare services for all Albertans. The recruitment of Dr. Janse van Rensburg will improve access to surgical services for patients in Red Deer and across central Alberta,” said LaGrange, in a statement.

The addition of Janse van Rensburg brings the number of anesthesiologists working in Red Deer to 15.

“There are high volumes of patients who come from the surrounding area to access the specialist programs at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, and the addition of Dr. Janse van Rensburg will help ensure the people of Red Deer and area can access the services they need,” said Dr. Jennifer Bestard, Zone Medical Director for Alberta Health Services Central Zone.

AHS continues to recruit for physicians across the Central Zone to meet community needs.

AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.

When he’s not working Janse van Rensburg enjoys spending time with his family, hiking and mountaineering, trail-running and cycling.

“My family looks forward to make the most of every season and all Alberta has to offer,” said Janse van Rensburg.

“I hope to contribute in a meaningful way to the ongoing need for specialist anesthesia services at Red Deer Regional and become a part of the community.”

Red Deer-South MLA Jason Stephan said Red Deer has many competitive advantages which make it an attractive place to live, work and raise a family, and it’s good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in the community.
