A new pair of anesthesiologists are practising at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, which Alberta Health Service says will improve access to surgical services for patients in central Alberta.

Dr. Mamdouh Mohamed and Dr. Mona Elrebigi, who are married to each other, are now practising out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, AHS announced Monday. This brings the number of anesthesiologists working in Red Deer to 15.

Dr. Mamdouh Mohamed received his medical training in Egypt and spent a decade working as an anesthesia specialist in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Elrebigi went to school in Egypt and most recently worked in Vermilion, Alta.

“Red Deer hospital offered me and my wife the opportunity to work together in the same hospital, so I consider it a family reunion,” said Dr. Mohamed.

“That was the most interesting part of my move to here. Red Deer has a great strategic and geographical location in Alberta, and education opportunities for my 15- and 14-year-old children. The operating room team never stopped asking me and my wife how they could help us with anything, and that has a great meaning to us.”

Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South, said “it is great to see more physicians choosing to make Red Deer their home, serving individuals and families in our wonderful community.”

Alberta Health Services said it is continuing to recruit physicians across Alberta to meet community needs.

“AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities,” AHS said in a statement.

“They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.”

AHS is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
