A Fatburger restaurant has opened in Red Deer.

Red Deer North Fatburger restaurant has opened at 6702 Golden West Avenue.

The owners — Ivy Siu and her husband Stephen Siu, her brother Michael Tong, and her parents Kin and Cecilia Tong — opened the Fatburger in Gasoline Alley in 2015.

The family also owns Red Deer’s two Ricky’s All Day Grills, and plans to open Ricky’s Cafés next door to the new Fatburger in the next month or two.

The restaurant’s roots go back to the 1950s in Los Angeles when the word fat meant cool or hip, the company said in a release on Friday.

The restaurant, licensed to serve alcohol, serves Alberta Angus beef burgers as well as chicken, turkey and veggie menu items, milkshakes. It has a children’s menu too.

There are approximately 50 of the chain restaurants in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, with several more to be opened during 2017.
