New record: Red Deer cases up Monday at 355

Alberta’s active cases at 20,067

With 1,734 COVID-19 cases confirmed Monday, Alberta has more than 20,000 active cases of the virus.

The testing positivity rate was about 8.5 per cent with more than 20,300 Albertans having tested Sunday.

The province confirmed 16 additional deaths in the last 24 hours. Death toll sits at 631.

Central zone was at 1,437 active cases up from the previous 1,391. There were 47 people in hospital in the local zone with five people in ICU. To date, 19 people have died in the zone.

Red Deer was at 355 active cases, up from 335 Sunday afternoon. That’s an increase of 20 cases.

According to the government’s geospatial mapping on the local geographic area setting, 96 of those cases are in Red Deer north, 204 are in Red Deer east and 55 are in southwest Red Deer (Gaetz Avenue).

In that same setting, east Ponoka County had 28 active cases Monday and Rimbey (West Ponoka County and partial Lacombe County) had 31.

Wetaskiwin County (Maskwacis) is reporting 252 active cases.

The steadily rising cases of the virus is troubling said the chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, during the Monday afternoon update.

“I will be blunt, so far we’re not bending the curve back down,” said Hinshaw.

She said her team has been working to put together additional recommendations for the cabinet to consider.

The most recent measures took effect in Alberta about two weeks ago.

“I think the current measures we have in place are not likely to bring down our numbers so we will need additional measures to do that.”

In the municipality setting, Red Deer County had 82 active cases of COVID-19, Kneehill County had 12, Mountain View County had 27 and Lacombe County had 63.

The Town of Sylvan Lake had 64 active cases, Olds had 29 active cases and Clearwater County sits at 63 active cases.

The City of Lacombe had 47 active cases, while the City of Wetaskiwin had 71.

The County of Stettler sat at 19 active cases Monday, 29 for Camrose County and 85 active in the City of Camrose.

According to Alberta website, there are eight outbreaks in the central zone’s supportive living/home living sites. These include Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury in Ponoka and Revera Aspen Lodge in Red Deer.

Other facilities with an outbreak include Olymel and Covenant Care Villa Marie in Red Deer.

The City of Red Deer, Red Deer County, Lacombe County, City of Lacombe, Town of Sylvan Lake, Ponoka County, County of Wetaskiwin, City of Wetaskiwin, Clearwater County, Camrose County, the City of Camrose and the Town of Olds and Mountain View County are under an enhanced watch by the province, indicating the communities have a rate of more than 50 active cases per 100,000 people.

In total, there are 609 Albertans in hospital with the virus of whom 108 are in intensive care unit.
