New trial date for man facing weapons charges

A new trial date has been set for a Red Deer man arrested on a variety of weapons offences.

Ricky Severin, 31, was to have been tried in Red Deer provincial court on Oct. 12 on charges laid early in January, when Red Deer City RCMP allege he was found packing a loaded pistol with its serial numbers ground off.

However, defence counsel Jake Chadi of Edmonton said at the outset of the trial that he was not prepared to proceed because he had recently received new information from the Crown prosecutor’s office in relation to the charges against his client.

Chadi asked that Severin be allowed to change his election to Court of Queen’s Bench by judge alone.

A new trial was ordered on nearly a dozen charges, including unsafe transport of a firearm, unauthorized transport of a firearm, possession of a firearm with the serial number removed and obstruction of a police officer.

Severin’s new trial is scheduled for Sept. 5 and 6, 2013.
