No fireworks in Red Deer during New Year’s Eve

If you’re heading to Bower Ponds New Year’s Eve for fireworks, you may be out of luck.

There are no fireworks Tuesday night at Bower Ponds. The rink will be open until midnight for those wanting to skate.

City of Red Deer communications team lead Tara Shand said there have been no fireworks in the city for New Year’s Eve in the last little while.

There have been no special permits requested by anyone to have fireworks Tuesday evening, Shand confirmed.

“So we’re not aware of any fireworks happening this evening in Red Deer.”

Shand said a community organization – Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society – puts on fireworks for Canada Day celebrations.

“Those are the only fireworks we’re aware of that are shot off on an annual basis within Red Deer,” said Shand.

There have been times when fireworks were on display during the Red Deer Lights the Night event, when the city comes together to light up the City Hall Park.

There will be fireworks on display Wednesday – on New Year’s Day – in Sylvan Lake. The annual town fireworks display on the pier and along Lakeshore Drive will begin at 7 p.m., weather dependent.
