A trial date has still not been set for a man accused of killing a young Red Deer woman about three years ago.
Bashir Gashaan, 32, has been in jail since his arrest in Thunder Bay, Ont., on June 20, 2011.
He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, as well as committing an indignity to a body and unlawful confinement.
The charges are in relation to the death of Jenna Cartwright, who was 21 at the time of her death.
Cartwright was reported missing on April 21, 2011. Her body was found in a ditch about 14 km north of Olds on May 3, 2011.
Gashaan fired his previous defence counsel on March 4, 2014.
Gashaan has retained new counsel, Naheem Rauf of Edmonton. Patty McNaughton appeared as Rauf’s agent during Gashaan’s arraignment in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday.
McNaughton asked that Gashaan’s arraignment be postponed by one month so Rauf could properly review the case.
A new trial date will be negotiated at the next Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench arraignment day, on May 5, 2014.
