Northside Community Centre YMCA is hosting an event to give Ukrainian youth the opportunity to hang out and meet new friends.

“We had heard that there were a lot of Ukrainian students dispersed throughout our schools in Red Deer and we just wanted to help them to connect with each other, but also connect with the youth in our community as well,” said youth supervisor Katelyn Berezanski.

“We will have mentors available to help facilitate those connections, and we have a volunteer to help with some of the language barriers.”

Ukrainian-Canadian Student Connect will be held June 17 during the Youth Drop-in, from 3 to 6 p.m. for ages 8 to 18, and during Teen Night, from 6 to 9 p.m. for ages 13 to 18. The event is free to attend.

The gym and youth centre will be open for sports, games, and activities, along with some snacks.

Berezanski said it’s the centre’s first event to reach out to young Ukrainians who are new to the city to let them know that the centre is a welcoming, safe space, and about the free programs that are available.

And hopefully they will return to participate in the regular Youth Drop-In and Teen Night programs, she said.
